I think it doesn’t take much to answer this question: yes, extremely sexist. In this post I’m focusing on the vintage ads, but more to come soon.
It doesn’t take much research to find a number of vintage sexist ads, with the image of women being useful only in the bedroom or kitchen (don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean they’re good cooks!). Those ads clearly stated that women weren’t as good as men
and that they should be kept in the place (as mentioned above – a kitchen/bed). The ads targeted at women often used fear as a tool to engage them with the product. Some examples include a facial cleanser Beauty in The Mirror which supposedly helped women look pretty in the morning which was supposed to assure the hubby would come back home after work instead of calling with a message “I won’t be home tonight”! Do you think this sexist? Have a look at the ad on the photo!
There’s more to come, watch this space!
